Question about children's names
I noticed records show my great grandparents (Wojciechowski and Gajkowski) had two daughters, one named Marianna (born in 1859 in Ulatowo-Czerniaki)) and one named Mariana (born in 1862 in Szla) . I know sometimes when one child dies they will name another child with the same name. Does anyone know if it's common to have two living children with the same name? In the Polish language is there really a difference between Marianna and Mariana?
According to Polish wikipedia:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marianna
the name Marianna was used in Poland since middle ages and was one of the commonest. It is the feminine form of Marian.
As to Mariana I feel doubtful - I would assume it is a result of mistaken spelling, missing second "n" in handwriting. At least I have never heard of anybody with that name.
It is very uncommon to have two children with the same name, as much here as anywhere else in the world.
