Pozdrowienia.

Polski nie jest mój język ojczysty, więc wybacz mi. I potwierdziły przodków z Mejszagola z suranme Giedrojć z 1840. Mam jednak znaleźć zapisy mikrofilm narodzin i śmierci z Mejszagola z ludźmi z nazwą Giedroycia. Czy te różne pisownie o tej samej nazwie? Czy też są różne rodziny razem?

Polish is not my native language so forgive me. I have confirmed ancestors from Mejszagola with the suranme Giedrojc from the 1840's. I have however found microfilm birth and death records from Mejszagola with people with the name Giedroyc. Are these different spellings of the same name? Or are they different families all together?

There were Giedroyc prices and Giedroyc peasants. The peasants may have taken their name from the village or from their masters.
In the old Russia there were princes of the names Chruszczow or Gagarin. Neither Nikita Chruszczow nor cosmonaut Yury Gagaring were descendants of these families. Most probably their ancestors were serfs belonging to these princes.

Thank You for your imput. My ancestors of the name are no doubt of peasant class as the baptism records I have found have confirmed. My question had to do with Giedrojc with the "J" Versus Giedroyc with a 'Y" would these be the a variation of the same surname? The reason the records I have found spell it with the "J" instead of the "Y".

Just wanted to know if the "Y" Giedrojc's are likely the same family.

Letters "Y" and "J" in names are the same. Spelling "Y" was used more than hundred years ago, but some names have retained letter 'Y" - like Woyciechowicz' instead of Wojciechowicz.

Up to mid nineteenth century spelling was unstable. So don't worry about the j/y difference. Besides, in olden times in Polish "y" was used to denote the same sound (phonem) as it does today in English.
