Lost in WWII

Witam,

Recently I have discovered a birth record (Pabiance 1914) on family member which has a side note written in German. The relative fell at leszno in 1941.

The family were early German's who came to Poland in the later part of 1700.

I am attempting to learn more on the death of this relative in Leszno. What side was he on? Is there a military record for him? Was he just an innocent, civilian who got caught in the line of fire during the war?

Can anyone provide help or direction? Where would I go to search for second world war casualties?

80 years after his death, we have only just learned his fate. Any help you can provide, will be greatly appreciated.

I looked at the record. It states "gefallen". Thi suggest he was a member of some military/police german force.
A lot of people with German origin joint Volksliste (voluntary or under pressure)

Leszno was not a German name but maybe someone used Polish name for some reanon. Maybe was killed during bombing?

I had the obituary translated and in it were some very touching words

If love could perform.miracles,
If tears could awaken the dead,
The foreign earth of a distant land
Would not be blanketing you.

I was hoping to learn that Robert was resistance and not Volksliste but it appears to be the later which is true.

On the sites you directed me to, I learned that often, they had no choice. The Obit states he was a Riffle man defending the Eastern front. I still have much to learn there, but thanks again for your direction it has helped a lot.

This cross is similar to German Iron Cross https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross - Robert Doring was a german soldier (schutze = private). He died during a winter campaign in the East (probably - my german isn't good)

Pabianice, 17 October 1942
Robert Döring was killed in action on 27 December 1941 in Leszno.
County Registrar Litzmannstadt (Lodz) Nr. 7133/1942 [the number and year of his death certificate]
The County Commissioner of County Lask
signed by a deputy, Schwarzlar(?)

Now the question is which Leszno the entry refers to. I assume it was somewhere east of Lodz.
