Pawel Belitzaj Born circa 1833

I am trying to find the baptism and family of Pawel Belitzaj (Bellitzay). I think that he was born in Brzezany, Galicja about 1833. He joined the Polish Legion in 1849 and later the Polish Democratic Society. He escaped to Turkey and arrived in England in 1851.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. I am using Google Translate to understand Polish!

W drugiej połowie sierpnia 1849 r. uszedł do Imperium Osmańskiego.
W Szumli wstąpił do Towarzystwa Demokratycznego Polskiego.
4  marca 1851  r. przybył do Liverpoolu z  drugą grupą Polaków.
W  1856  r. mieszkał w  Glasgow, w  1868  w  Kidder-minster.
Przed 1892  r. żył jeszcze w  Halifaksie

Thank you for your reply, it is much appreciated; do you know where "Szumla" is located? I cannot find it on any current maps. I believe that he boarded the SS Arpia in Constantinople (Istanbul) with other Polish refugees on 22nd January, 1851.

I have fully researched Pawel since his arrival in England but it's his past in Poland which I know nothing about. When he married he stated that his father's name was John/Jan and that he was a 'gentleman'.

I do not know which faith he followed in Poland - he married in a protestant church in England but that may have been his new wife's religion rather than his own.

1. Szumla is Shumen (Szumen) today (Bulgarian: Шумен, also romanized as Shoumen or Šumen) is the tenth largest city in Bulgaria

2. Your ancestor and my Konstanty Wojciech Broczkowski (12 lutego 1829 - ?) were in the same army - European Revolutions of 1848. They were transferred from Szumla to Liverpool in March 1851.
He settled in Stoke upon Trent.

Thank you Krystyna - your information is very useful to me. I understand that these men sailed on the Arpia from Constantinople (Istanbul) arriving in Liverpool, England 5th March, 1851 - one day later than expected. Szumla seems to be a very long way from Istanbul - I think that they were held in a prison before leaving for England. I'm just trying to put together all the information which I've found or been told by very helpful members on this forum.

Not prison. They were soldiers and were interned.

Have you any ship manifest or other documents?
He married in 1856, had 9 children (but 4 died). Part of them emigrated to USA.
No idea when and where he died.
