It seems that Bronislaw can be both a boy's name and a girl's name. True? So the only way to tell if Bronislaw is male or female is by the last name, - ska or -ski, right?

You will definitely see this looking at birth and marriage records because the phrasing is frequently the marriage of or a child born of, both of which would result in the declination of Bronisław being Bronisława.

According to the index, in 1887 Bronislaw Karboska was born in Mazowieckie. In 1888 Bronislaw Karboski was born in Mazowieckie. I would like to have the 1887 birth to be for Bronislawa but the scan data is not available. So you can see my confusion.

Paul, in 1887 Bronisława Karbowska, a female, was born in Gąsewo parish. In 1888 Bronisław Karbowski, a male, was born in Płoniawy parish. Two separate people.

Thank you Karolina. I was hoping that the 1887 Bronisława was my grandmother as I can find no more records like that. But it looks like Bronisława from Gąsewo probably got married there in 1916. I'll keep looking. Pozdrawiam.

Bronislaw Karbowski is positively male because his surname ending with > ski<. All surnames ending with > ski < describes male. Surnames ending with > ska < describes female.Hawever if unmarried woman gives berth to son, in birth certificate her son will be as Bronislaw KarbowSKA. Check if mother of Bronislaw was married.

Thanks Zbigniew. That is a good theory. But all I know is what is on the index data from geneteka and it does not show much for Bronisław Karbowska born in 1887 in Gąsewo. (No info on parents' names.)
