Please help me find my great-great-grandmother's maiden name

Hello! Apologies if my Polish translation is off - I'm using an online translator as I only speak English, but I was told that posting in Polish is easier for everyone here.

I am trying desperately to find my great-grandmother's mother's (my great-great grandmother's) maiden name and was told that someone here should be able to point me in the right direction. Her married name is Helena Dombrowska (Dombrowski). She was born in Poland in 1890 and died on Long Island, NY, USA in 1942. She was married to John Joseph Dombrowski. I believe he was born in 1884 somewhere in Poland and died in 1934 on Long Island, New York.

They had 6 children, I believe (there may be more that passed away) - Mary, Katherine (Kay), Stanley, Sigmond (Siggy), John Joseph Jr., and Angela (Angie). I have the most information on my great-grandmother, Mary (Marianna). Mary was born on 10 July 1903 in Czyzew-Osada, Podlaskie, Poland and her family immigrated to the US sometime between 1905 and 1908 - I keep finding conflicting information, but I believe it was 1905.

Mary married Adam Mieczkowski (born 24 December 1891 in Nowa Wies Ostrodzka, Warminsko-Mazurskie, Poland and died 26 December 1955 on Long Island, NY, USA) and they had two sons - Adam Jr. (Adam Lucian) and Joseph Thomas Mieczkowski.

If anyone can help with this mystery, I would be extremely grateful. Thank you in advance!

First off, look for the surname Dąbrowski, not Dombrowski. The “ą” in there is a nasal sound similar to French “on” in, e.g, “bon”, that we have in Polish. Since English has no nasals this was replaced by “om” in English.

If you want further help, pls provide additional details. Did John and Helena got married in the US or they came together already a married couple there?
If that’s the first, look for their marriage record in the local parishes. This will reveal her maiden name.

If they were already married on arrival, ask people here specializing in the region – in this case this will be Kujawy, I guess. It will be a bit of a problem, though, because Dąbrowski is quite popular surname in Poland. BTW, his name is Dąbrowski, but the feminine form is Dąbrowska. We inflect names by gender.

Hi! Thank you for explaining the surnames to me - that's helpful and I had no idea!

I am not sure where they got married. I'm assuming it was in Poland, because they came to the US with Mary, who was about 2 at the time, and they had the rest of the children in the US.

Where is the best place to ask someone specializing in that region? Really appreciate your help. As you can tell, I am new to this forum and to research this in-depth. I have been using Ancestry.com previously.

Interesting... I've seen her maiden name potentially as Godonis, with a birth year of 1888, but I couldn't find anything to really substantiate that.

Since I'm unable to actually read Polish, could you tell me which page of the scans at that link actually shows that?

Just FYI, it's considered polite to sign oneself when posting on this forum (and elsewhere in the civilized world too, for that matter).

The marriage certificate, which is in Russian,
states the marriage took place on the 15th of June 1904, in Czyżew.
The groom, Jan Dąbrowski, 21 years old, born in ?? (I can read it but am not sure of the translation) and living in Warsaw, son of Onufry Dąbrowski and his wife Franciszka nee Krystosiak.
The bride, Helena Gudonis, 19 years old, born in Czyżew, daughter of Wincenty Gudonis and his wife Elżbieta nee Teodorkowska.

In Russian it reads: ...v Senicy Gizah Rosohatskavo prihoda, which I translate as "in Siennica Giza, Rosochacki parish".
Google map shows Siennica Gizy about 8 km E of Czyżew, so I'd hazard that's the place.
These communities are about halfway between Warsaw and Białystok.

NB, the very kind people above also gave you a link to Jan's birth record, which is in "Synica Gizy" (Russian transliteration), and that's a good match to his birthplace given in the marriage record.
