conquistadori pisze: What is the town name without the translation, just out of curiosity?
The Polish name of that village is Siennica Gizy.

In the above-linked birth certificate, the name of the village was written using the old (pre-reform) Russian alphabet - Сѣница Гизы.

Thank you, Michal! Appreciate the map for reference as well! Very cool to see, as an American who has no sense of the geography!

Have a great day!

As in the title of this thread you asked in fact about the maiden name of your n x great-grandie, and I hear it is Gudonis, be informed that this surname is Lithuanian, not Polish. So deeper research will probably take to Lithuania.

There is a row of brown buttons at the top of the main page, just to the right of the flags. The sixth of these, the one with the icon in the shape of a magnifying glass, will take you to the search machine of already indexed resources. There, in the search field, you may input a surname and, after hitting the search button, you will get the distribution of the records of persons bearing this surname broken into regions and years.

I see that Gudonis peaks in the area to the north-east of Wilno, the capital of Lithuania. So a good guess would be one of your ancestors must have migrated to Kujawy from there.
Pozdrawiam

Marek

Oh wow... the mystery deepens even further! Thanks for the very detailed instructions! I will definitely look into that!

And now I really want to do a DNA test to see if any Lithuanian shows up! My sister did one awhile back, so I'm checking with her to see what her results say. This forum truly is a hidden gem of knowledge!

Thank you so much!

Cheers,
Dori

Yes, I JUST found that!! Is there a way to see what his mother and Elzbieta's mother's maiden names were? I'm still not totally sure how to navigate this site yet, but it has so much information!!

Thank you!

Elżbieta was born in Zazamcze in 1851, baptized in Włocławek, scan no 38 on the genealogiawarchiwach site under year 1851. Her mother's maiden name was not Osińska, but Ogińska. Father Walenty Teodorkowski

A little tip: if you type in Teodor*, instead of Teodorkowska on the search site in genetyka, it will search for all names starting with Teodor, as in this case, Elżbieta's surname was indexed as Teodurkowska
As you can see, she had siblings, I checked that Andrzej born in 1854 was her brother.

Walenty and Marcjanna got married in 1845 in Włocławek. Scan no 78 on genealogiawarchiwach site. Walenty's parents are Jakub and Jadwiga, he was 23 and he was born in Witowo. Marcjanna's parents are Maciej and Klara born Chojnacka, she was 19, born in Wie... (I can't read the name of the village)

To access the scans, click on a little square next to the year that you're interested in, under the options column:
https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/#qu ... uery.query

Back to Wincenty Gudonis, it says he was 30 on his marriage certificate, so born ca. 1849. There is no village he was born in, but there is a name of the village his mother lived in, but somehow I can't read it (Dargupsy?). It's name will be in Lithuanian nowadays, the Troki deanery books are on the familysearch site, just type in Troki there and go to Metrical books : Deanery, 1700-1938, but you will need the name of the parish so you know where to look.

Edit: The name of the village that Marcjanna Ogińska was born is Wieniec.

Good luck

You are amazing! That is so helpful - thank you so much!!

Where is Wieniec? Ancestry is showing me three options - Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Malopolskie, or Warminkso-Mazurskie. Do you happen to know which one is correct?

This is only one side of my family... wait til we move on to the other!

Seriously, thank you so much!!

It's next to Włocławek. I always type in the place I know, in this case Włocławek, in google maps, and then go to directions, and start typying the village I'm looking for. It will almost always suggest the one that lies the closest.
I also suggest searching surnames with *, like I said Teodor*, as in the 19th century common people started to add ski to their surnames. It may be that the surname had a different ending n the past.

Marcjanna Ogińska was born in 1821, village Ciemiega, parish Wieniec,
Site genealogiawarchiwach, scan no 6.
https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/#qu ... uery.query

I searched for the Ogińsk* surname, it looks like her other siblings were also born in Brześć Kujawski.

On the genetykawarchiwach site there are no years provided for Brześć Kujawski
https://www.genealogiawarchiwach.pl/#qu ... uery.query

To know what year corresponds to what number, look here:
https://szukajwarchiwach.pl/71/187/0/-/ ... bJednostki

Looks like Maciej was born in Rzadkowola, parish Brześć Kujawski, in 1794, his parents Augustyn and Ewa Gniadkowska got married in Brześć Kujawski in 1790. Ewa died in 1804 and Augustyn remarried. The acts before 1808 are not online, they are probably in Church archives.

Actually I checked, the acts before 1808 are on Familysearch, but they are locked. You need someone with an access or go to an affiliated library
