- William J. ''Dick'' Muniga, 81, of Amherst, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006, at the home of his daughter in Amherst, following a long illness. He was born Dec. 16, 1924, in Amherst and was a lifelong resident of the city.
Muniga was employed at Cascade Pattern in Elyria for 45 years as a master industrial pattern maker.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1442 and American Legion Post 118, all in Amherst.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed cooking, gardening, especially flowers, and his family.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received the American Service and WWII Victory medals and the point system.
Survivors include his sons
Richard Muniga of Naples, Fla., and
Gene Muniga of Amherst; daughters Gayle Castro of Elyria and Mary Meyer of Amherst; sister, Francis Hodrosky of Lorain; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elaine Lois (nee Reichert), in March 2006; his parents,
Michael and Catherine (nee Skura) Muniga; brothers
Pete Muniga and
Hank Muniga; sisters Carrie Shullick, Marcella Kenzik and Wanda Showalter; and a great-grandson.
Friends may call Thursday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Prayers there Friday at 9:30 a.m. will be followed at 10 a.m. by Mass in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive. The Rev. Lawrence Martello, pastor, will officiate, and the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will conduct honors. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.
