Dr. Michael Szabuniewicz, 96 years young, of Bryan, TX, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2006, peacefully in his home to join Isabella, his one true love. He was born on October 11, 1909, in Oszmiana District, Poland. He earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. from the Veterinary Medicine Academy in Lvov, Poland.
Michael was a cavalry officer in the Polish army when World War II broke out and soon after was caught by the German army and spent 5 years as a prisoner of war. After the war, he worked as a veterinarian for the Belgian government and was in charge of an agricultural ranching facility in the Belgian Congo. Here, he married his wife of 59 years and had 2 sons. With the political unrest, he immigrated his family to the U.S. in 1961. Because of his service in the Congo, the King of Belgium bestowed him with the highest award available for a civilian, the Royal Order of the Lion.
Michael worked at Texas A&M University in the College of Veterinary Medicine for 13 years, where he was designated Professor Emeritus. During his tenure, he was a prolific researcher and strived to teach with a practical approach and yet impart a bit of his inquisitive nature to his students. His collaboration with peers in research led him to have many articles published in various journals. He retired from Texas A&M at the age of 65. His love for teaching and research continued, though, as it led him to teach in Iran and Venezuela.
In all, his career has spanned 40 years, two wars and four continents.
He was a mild-natured man with no ill feelings toward anyone, and was always teaching through his exemplary lifestyle.
He is preceded in death by his wife Isabella. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, J.M. and Helen of Weatherford, TX; son Charles Henry of Bryan, TX; 6 grandchildren, Eva, Lydia, and Julia of Weatherford, TX, Victoria of Georgetown, TX, and Michael and Catherine of Bryan, TX, and 2 step-grandsons, Chad and Brett Eikenhorst of College Station, TX.
We all will surely miss his fountain of youth and wisdom.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 21, 2006, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father David Konderla officiating. Interment will follow at College Station Cemetery. A visitation will take place from 6-8 p.m. Sunday evening at Hillier Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday by Deacon Bill Scott.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, College Station, TX.
