My closest polish ancestor is my great great grandmother Irena Konstancja Szejko, who was born 18.08.1903 to captain of 218 Borisoglebskiy battalion Gabryel Szejko and his wife Stefania Malinowska. Her father was born in Kurland and belonged to noble house Szejko h. Szeliga from Kowno governorate, her mother was a daughter of collegiate secretary of Vitebsk assembly of the nobility Jan Malinowski h. Pobóg. According to family legends Szejkowie decent from crimean tatars that were captured by Polish. Actually I possess quite a significant amount of information about both families and have a page on a russian website but maybe I could find out a little bit more here or my knowledge would be helpful for others.
Gabryel Szejko was born 17.05.1858 in Dviete, Kurland governorate to Wiktor Wincenty Karol Szejko h. Szeliga and Zuzanna Róża h. Poraj. In 1877 he studied in Instytut Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego i Leśnictwa (http://historiaiung.pulawy.pl/Alfabetyc ... śnictw.php) but dropped out during the first year and entered Vilnius Military School. From 1880 to 1891 he served in 108th Saratov regiment, from 1891 till 1909 in 218th Borisoglebsk battalion and from 1909 till his retirement in 1913 in 3 Pernowski Pułk Grenadierów Króla Fryderyka Wilhelma IV. He took a part in Russian campaign in China in 1900 and in Russo-Japanese war, for which he was decorated. The next year after his retirement with a rank of lieutenant colonel the Great War started, so he enlisted voluntarily and took under his command «94-я пешая Калужская дружина государственного ополчения», which he commanded till his illness in march 1915. He received treatment in Yalta and then in 20-s we lost his trace somewhere in Crimea. We have a photo of him standing there on a seashore in his uniform with colonel’s shoulder straps.
