Ciao fab genealodzy.pl forum heroes

Please help me :)

Surname change from Banke to Baingo - why?

First, again thank you
As before truly, thank you SO much for your stellar site & search functionality which has hugely helped me on my www.ancestry.co.uk family tree (I have linked to your results many times). Through your fab site, I have found many descent relatives and also with the help of stellar and really lovely person in the forum (Axee) who helped me.

My Grandfather's surname: Baingo
During lockdown with the help of stellar Axee I traced my Silesian grandfather's ancestry

My Grandfather: Erwin Baingo (1887 Rybna,Tarnowskie Góry, Silesia - 1947, Dresden)

My Silesian ancestor's surname: Banke
I had hit a brickwall until stellar fab Axee, showed me (with stellar investigation) that my grandfather's surname had been changed through his ancestors to Banke.

Every time I meet some one in London who is Polish: I proudly say my grandfather is Polish from Silesia, but when I ask them if they think Baingo is a Polish name they always say they it doesn't sound like it and indeed they say it is a rare surname.

Any ideas why my grandfather's Silesian's family's name was changed from Banke to Baingo?

Is Banke more Polish name?
Is Baingo more Germanic name?

Baingow in Siemianowice Śląskie

The first reference to settlement Bańgów / Baingow dates back to 1596. During the German Empire it was renamed to Baingow.

I have read many Poland history books - e.g. Poland by Adam
Zamoyski (read twice as was so hard!) but i can't suss.

Forgive me for sounding bizarre - it was an intrigue of my mother (who is now in heaven, and I would like to fulfil her intrigue).

Certainly not.

Bańgów

1. Silesians pronounce some sounds differently.
2. Formerly "belonging to Bańka", e.g. house, horse, cart = Bańków
In central Poland they said "Bańków house" and in Silesia it was pronounced Bańgów house

Again Krystyna rocks

Thank you so much for your really enlightening and swift response.

Thank you for pl.wikipedia.org link - i had discovered it when researching my grandfather as I thought (as another Berliner Baingo) the surname change had derived from there. Mummy always said there was a town named after her father Baingo but now through my research I think my grandfather's ancestors changed their name to a derivation of that town / village?

Mega please forgive me of my lack of understanding of the Silesian history. I read Poland by Adamm Zamoysk so carefully and TWICE - after billions of pages and v complicated history, it only mentioned Silesia .. twice! So please forgive me of my apparent lack of understanding about Silesian history. Trust me - I so appreciate differentiations . I am half Scottish... when living in Hamburg and Milan I constantly picked them up when they would refer to my "home" country as England and not Scotland.

Thank you for your insightful reply.

Shoot me asking for confirmation, I hope i won;t anger you (as I;m really grateful for your reply) - is Banke / Banka (sometimes my ancestors are documented in familysearch) NOT a Polish surname? So a Prussian surname?

If you look at the name distribution map, you will find the name Banke in Silesia, the former Prussia, and West Prussia.
https://nvk.genealogy.net/map/1890:banke

The surname Baingo is also found in Silesia.

According to Geneteka, Baingo also appears as a variant of the spelling Banko, which is also found in Silesia.

Further considerations are speculative, but it seems that the name originates from 'Banadykt,' a dialectal form of the name Benedykt.

This family name is a shortened name 'Ban' to which the diminutive suffix '-ko' was added, similar to: Franciszek - Frąc(ko); Bartłomiej - Bart(ko); Maciej - Mac(ko)/Maćko, and so on.

In the case of the surname Banke, it is likely that it has a German diminutive suffix '-ke,' similar to 'Tomke."

The distribution and such variant spellings suggest the influence of the German language on the spelling.

I speak German and Polish, so I may be biased.

Thank you so much Łukasz! That was truly so interesting and thank you for the links. Before 1882 my great great grandfather Ferdinand Johann (1825, Wüstenhammer, Silesia - 1886, Laurahütte, Silesia) changed his surname from Banke / Banka to Baingo, as did his siblings. If I am correct in thinking in 1871 - Silesia became part of the German Empire.

This will help me in my search for my 5 times great grandfather Jospeh Banke (Abt 1747 - Before 1795) of Woiska ? as I will also consider the Banko variation.

Hugest thank you - you have been really kind and helpful :)

Only Bańka is Polish.
