Hello,

My grandfather's cousin, Ignacy Krasowski, immigrated to the USA in 1951 from Great Britain. On the passenger list he is listed as "stateless." He was joining my grandmother in Michigan.

( In FamilySearch this is the passenger list https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24Y9-WKH )

I don't know how he got to Great Britain, but I've been reading a lot about all of the Polish soldiers who fought alongside the British in World War II, and I was thinking he might have been one of those soldiers who could not return home to Poland (for obvious reasons.)

Do you know of any online databases where you can search for Polish soldiers in the British armed forces in World War II?

Thanks for any information you might have,

Bob Schroeder

To nie dotyczyło tylko żołnierzy.
W 1951 roku to już raczej decyzja USA o uznaniu/nieuznaniu statusu z 1939 roku.

Hi Bob,

Assuming your grandparent really served in the Polish Armed Forces in the West – this need not be case, though – his service records must be still kept in the British MoD archives. I suggest you start looking here:
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/abo ... e-records/

He might also have gotten out of the country anytime after 1945, which was then already under communist regime. There were a few cases like this, mostly members of the anticommunist underground that escaped persecution. In this case contact this organization:
https://www.studium.org.uk/index.php/en/

Finally, he might have been forcibly transferred to Germany during WWII as the so called Zivilarbeiter:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zivilarbeiter

and liberated by the British forces towards the end of the war. I don’t know where to start in this case. Possibly Red Cross archives?

When looking for his traces, try also an alternate spelling Krassowski.

All the best with your research.

Hello Ela,

Thanks for the links to the WBH! I think that the records are for the cousin of my grandfather, Ignacy - his father was Kazimierz and his mother was Stefania.
