Dear Madam,
I am searching for my ancestors who have the surname Gnida. The only clue I have is my great-great-grandfather, whose name was Josef Gnida (though I am not entirely sure about the first name). I know that he came from a wealthy family and, at the beginning of the 20th century, he married a common townsfolk woman from Moravia, which led to his disinheritance by his family. Because of her, he moved to the Czech Republic (Moravia), probably to the town of Bystřice pod Hostýnem, where he is also buried.
Do you have any connection with someone with this surname who could help me with my search? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Marek Vančo

Hi Marek,
If you do not know where your great-great-grandfather was born or lived in Poland (village, town, parish or region) so it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Both first and last name are common and how we can know which Józef Gnida is „yours” ?

I suggest you to start your search in Moravia as you know that Josef Gnida was buried there. Find his grave and maybe his tombstone contains dates of birth and death. Next step is getting his death certificate from the Civil Registry or church. The death certificate should have his date and place of birth and names of his parents. It is very likely that his wedding took place in Moravia in a parish of his wife, common practice was getting married in a parish of bride. If you find his marriage certificate you will have there his date and place of birth, names of parents, age etc. Then you can try to find his birth and baptism certificates in Poland and follow his ancestors.
Good luck in your search.
Best wishes,
