Dear Fellow Researchers!
My name is Jarosław Schramel, I am 39 years old and I live with my wife and three children in Katowice.
For more than two years I have been researching the history and genealogy of my family on the side of my father Krzysztof, son of Kazimierz. My grandfather was the son of Stanislaw (1890-1969), a clerk from Chrzanów, whose father was Ludwik Schramel (1850-1896). The latter was an officer and sub-commander of the fire brigade in Tarnów, and died at the beginning of September 1896, following injuries he sustained during a firefight in Stary Sącz. This is confirmed by the contents of a letter Stanisław wrote in November 1953 in response to questions from my grandfather Kazimierz about his ancestors.
And now we come to the point: Ludwik Schramel's father was Maciej - a barrister and solicitor - who provided material support to the January Uprising (1863). After the fall of the uprising, Maciej had to endure persecution from the partitioning authorities until he finally decided to travel to the USA with his wife and was planning to later bring their son (Ludwik) and daughter there. According to my estimate, this took place between 1864 and 1865.
Maciej Schramel boarded a ship departing from the port of Bremen with his wife and sailed overseas together, sending a card to his family early on to say that they were setting off. And this is basically where things get complicated and the trail breaks off.... Maciej never made contact with his relatives from present-day Poland again, and it was only information obtained from an acquaintance returning from the States that allowed the family to learn the truth: Maciej and his wife had settled somewhere in the western US, where they had their own farm. And that was all.
I tried, on my own, to track down any documents confirming Maciej Schramel's presence in the States, but unfortunately I was unsuccessful.
I will be most grateful for your tips on how to obtain any possible information about my ancestor.
