Hello, I am looking for a female ancestor whose surname is Yisghil (spelling may be incorrect). I do not know where in Poland she may have lived or her year of birth. Guessing from her son's age, perhaps she was born around 1820? She was the first wife of Josef Popp, who was from Swiss Tyrol or Bavaria and owned a mill. They had two children, a boy named Josef (born 1841) and a girl. After Yisghil died Josef married a widow with eight children and I believe they had one child together. Josef later died by drowning in the mill pond. His son Josef married Teresa Schroeder in 1864 and they emigrated to America in 1865.

If you have any information on Yisghil (or Josef Popp) I would appreciate your help?

How do you know that this "Yisghil" came from Poland? This name surely does not sound Polish. If you have any documents showing this name, please attach them here.

Regards,

I am not sure if "Yisghil" is from Poland, it is one avenue I am searching. I have only seen this name on one document which is a death certificate for her son, Joseph. I may not be able to read the handwriting well or it was not spelled correctly by the person who wrote it. Bavaria is actually listed as her birthplace, but I have not found any records there and thought to try Poland because I found a census form on which Joseph's son Max lists his parents birthplace as Poland, I know that the family members spoke both German and Polish and when I tried to search "Yisghil" it returned this Polish site. So I thought perhaps there is a Polish connection here. But maybe it is another dead end! You should be able to access the documents I mentioned at this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/toywypv17b12yha/uYkqHhEyWT

If you can better read the name, please let me know your thoughts! Thanks for your help.

Jola suggested that Popp is a very popular surname in Pomorze (Pomerania) and Kujawy, while wife's name may be Jurgel, Jorgel, Jurgiel or so (Yurghil?). Schroder can also be easily found in Pomerania. As regards the place, the document reads Bravaria, not Bavaria, maybe it is deformed word "Pomerania", or a name of a town (no idea which one). Jola guessed that Poland as a place of birth is a strong argument that you should investigate Polish records, so Bavaria is most probably a dead end. Still, names and places in this document are probably strongly deformed so you have to rely on your imagination.

I'm no expert as regards Pomerania, you can also look for help here: http://www.ptg.gda.pl/

Thank you so much, Marcin and Jola! This gives me something to look for. I will dig into some Polish/Pomeranian records and see what I can find.
