Can anyone offer any information on my grandfather Stanislaw Ziołkowski and my grandmother Marjanny Skorupkow who lived in Warsaw, Octota up until september 1939. My father Jozef Ziołkowski faught with the polish army in 1939 and escaped to hungary then to england. He joined the free polish army under allied command and fought with the 1st Polish Armoured Division. My father returned to scotland at the end of the war but was never able to return to poland. My father made some research after the war for his family but with no success.
My father passed away in the late 1970s when i was very young and so i was unable to ask for more details. i am certain about my grandfathers name but a little less sure of the exact spelling for my grandmothers maiden name.
i have very little information to help with my research. i believe that my grandparents had four children, two sons and two daughters. My father was born 7/11/1916 in Flistopada, Warsaw - Praga and was registered at SW. Michala Archaniola sw Floriana. The family may have lived in ul Mochnackiego in warsaw until 1939.
i have tried some research over the the years but have always come to a dead end.

many thanks for your reply and interest. my father died in 1977 and on my mothers recent death i have discovered some fragments of his polish military identity card. i have already approached the military archive in warsaw and they have replied as follows:
jozef ziolkowski pelnil sluzbe w wojsku polskim w 1 pulku artylerii przeciwlotniczej im MARSZALKA EDWARDA SMIGLEGO- RYDZA w 12 baterii od 24 lutego 1938. daty zakonczenia sluzby oraz udzialu w kampanii 1939 roku centralne archiwum wojskowe nie moze potwierdzic z uwagi na brak materialow archiwalnych z tego okresu......
on the fragments of his polish military it shows Kanonier L 869/38 jozef Ziolkowski and promoted to bombardier 9/2/1939 and promoted to corporal 28/7/1939.
The british army records office show my father as 2nd lieutenant in the 1 anti aircraft artilery regiment, 1 polish armoured division and served in the battles for nothern france and belgium. he also is linked with the polish independant parachute brigade at some point.
i have several spellings for my grandmother skorupow, skorupek , marianna and marjanny. my father never spoke much about his youth but my sister remembers his talking about his younger sister and brothers.
any help with finding out what happened to his family would be greatly appreciated i do not speak polish and thus find it very difficult to proceed.

i have checked with my sister and it would appear that my father once said that his older brother was killed by the germans in warsaw and that his name or boleslaw , wladyslaw or similar.
my father apparently was at university when he entered the army in 1938.
Also, importantly, we have an old postcard dated 1943? from my grandfather stanisalw ziolkowski to a friend and this show his address as ul mochnackiego 11 m 4. we have no idea how my father managed to get his postcard and it remains a mystery.
My father was proud to be polish and From 1945 lived in Scotand in a large community of ex soldiers and refugeees. my father and many others died without having the opportunity to see a free Poland and to return to search for his family.
i thank you for your interest and assistance

Hi Nico,
If you already have your father's military records from the British Military Archives then I suggest that you write/phone the Sikorski Institue to see if they have any additional records for your father in their archives. I'm assuming that the records you already have are from:
APC Polish Enquiries
Building 60
RAF Northolt
West End Road
Ruislip
Middlesex
HA4 6NG
If not, then you will need to write to the Polish Section MOD at the above address where individual service files are held. With the information you receive from them you can then approach the Sikorski Insitute, address:
20 Prince's Gate, London, Greater London SW7 1PT
to see if the Institute has any other papers relating to your father'is military record. I read somewhere that soldiers who fought under the British (but in Polish units) had to write a short bio. Unfortunately I don't know if this is true or not.
There is now a charge of £25 for a two hour search at the Sikorski Institute.
There also may be a charge at Ruislip (around £30) but I could be wrong.
I'm sorry that I can't help you with finding your relatives in Warsaw, but I don't live in Poland.
Please ask Aneta in the thread Indeks ofiar terroru i członków podziemia 1939-1944 to see if there are any Ziolkowski's listed as being killed during the Warsaw Uprising:
Kind regards, Pomponik

many thanks for the reply. i have already received a copy of my fathers war record from the polish section of the MOD . This shows in detail the units , training and the actions that he was involved with as part of the allied command. it also mentions my grandmother and grandfathers name, but nothing else family related.
The polish section were also able to give me my fathers war medals awarded by the allies, but never collected. That was a real shock and very emotional for all the family.
I Then approached the Sikorski museum who provided me with several unit diaries that featured my father.
My real interest now is to attempt to discover a little more about his life pre 1939. As a family , we have no information, only fragments of a story.
many thanks once again and i would recommend the approach that you suggest as it worked well for me.
regards nick

i can easily scan the postcard but how do i make it available for all to see on the forum.
I contacted the Tracing Service through the red cross in 2011 but after a search they replied that no further information could be found about my grandparents. This could be because i was unable to give them sufficient detailed information.

many that for your continued help and advise. i will attempt to publish the postcard and other details this weekend for all to see. It is important to me that i somehow find out the manes of my fathers brothers and sisters and check against the names listed as victims. i will also scan a copy of my fathers birth registration in the hope that it might offer additional clues.
my thanks again nick
