Pozdrowienia,

Greetings,

My ancestors on a parish list from Mejszagola in 1840 are referrred to as Dworzanin/Dworzanka and in other vital records are referred to as nobles. Is a Dworzanin or Dworzanka a type of noble or a position of a nobleman or noblewoman?

Thank You,

Hugh

Russia had very formalized social structure with strong stratification. Dvoryanye , Russian nobilty, were at the top of the ladder and were scarce in number. In the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth the nobility, szlachta, constituted roughly 10 % of the nation. The legal status of these social groups was very different in these two countries. After the partitions and annexation of large portions of the Commonwealth, Russia faced the problem of accommodating the large number of szlachta into their society. Some of them were given the status of dvorayanye, others were denied.
In short, the administration of the Russian state attempted to reduce the number szlachta admitted to dvoryanye as much as they could for various reasons, and the fact that this was a rebellious group opposing the Russian oppression was among most important. Read this:
